General Questions

My player's classmates are in a different soccer age group than my player. Can my player be transferred to the same age group as their classmates?
All RFU programs are based on birth year, not school year. Advanced League teams are offered as single birth year teams (for example, 2011 birth years will make up 14u teams in 2024-2025). RFU's recreational programs (Academy, All-Valley, and MRL) are set up to combine birth years into 6u, 8u, 10u, 12u, and 15u teams.

Players are not permitted to "play down" in age group. This is a US Soccer rule that is enforced by Colorado Soccer Association (CSA). Players cannot be placed on a CSA roster if they are not birth year eligible. Only CSA can grant exemptions to this. It can be done through an appeal process that requires families to submit medical and school documentation to CSA to illustrate the developmental need for a player to participate in a younger age group.

If the Club has identified that it is developmentally appropriate, and there is space on an older roster, a player may "play up" in age group. This is not a decision that is made by families. It is only considered when it will benefit both the team and the individual player's development. Players of the designated birth year will receive roster placement priority over players "playing up" in age group.

When possible, players will be placed on rosters with players of their own birth year.  However, registration numbers and family preferences for recreational programs can make it difficult to achieve single birth year teams, particularly for players registering late or being activated from a waitlist.

What if my player is placed on a roster/team that does not work for my family?

If your player is offered a spot on an Advanced League roster that does not work for your family, you will have the opportunity to decline the roster spot before completing the registration and making a payment for the season.

If your player is placed on an MRL, All-Valley, or Academy roster that does not work for your family, registrations can be cancelled and a refund issued before 8/15.

Advanced League Questions

Is Advanced League the right option for my player?

Advanced League requires more commitment from players/families, but players who want to participate on those teams do not need to be the best, most advanced players. They do need to be players/families who are committed to soccer for the fall and spring season and who understand that the expectations for attendance, communication, and participation/effort at practice will be higher. As long as your player is engaged in improving at soccer and wants to make the commitment to taking it a little more seriously next year, than the Advanced League is a great option.

What are the major differences between Advanced League and MRL?

  • Teams in the Advanced League will travel to the front range for their away games; teams in the Mountain Region League will travel within the western slope for away games.
    • Actual locations for both leagues are dependent on the other teams that register in the same division
  • Advanced League teams are single birth year.
    • If we have enough players register, we could have 11u and 12u teams that would each play in a division with other teams of their birth year.
    • Mountain Region League teams are 12u and 15u, so 11u and 12u players will all play on teams that participate in a 12u division.
  • The Advanced League includes many more teams than the Mountain Region League.
    • This means that there are more options/divisions (8 different division levels) to place Advanced League teams. This means that teams see more appropriate competition consistently throughout the season.
    • In the Mountain Region League, there are only one or two divisions in each age group. Fewer divisions means that the possibility that one or two teams in the division could be significantly better or worse than the others is much higher.

What are the steps for Advanced League team creation and placement?

  • Players complete their Intent to Play Advanced League (by 6/1). No player is guaranteed placement on any particular team.
  • Teams are created from the pool of players who have shown intent to play advanced league using birth year and player evaluations. See RFU player placement process for more details.
  • Coaches are assigned to teams.  Note: This happens after teams are created.
  • Advanced League Teams are registered to fall divisions based on roster make-up by 6/7.
  • Players are notified of their roster placement via email.
  • Players have the opportunity to the accept or decline the spot they are offered.

What is the difference between 2024-2025 Intent to Play Advanced League and the Spring 2025 Intent to Play Advanced League?
A spring 2025 intent to play will open on 6/2 - this option is for HS boys who do not have a fall club season and players interested in moving from MRL to Advanced League between the fall and spring season. Players who opt to complete the spring 2025 intent to play will be added to rosters in December (if/where there is space) and will be eligible to begin participating with teams beginning in January 2025.

Players who want to participate in summer or pre-season tournaments, or be placed on an Advanced League team for fall 2024 must complete the 2024-2025 Intent to Play Advanced League. Players who complete this after 6/1 will incur a $50 late fee.
