What are Age Divisions?

Age Divisions Explained

Soccer age divisions are designated with a “U”,  e.g. U10, U12, etc..

•   The “U” stands for “Under”    e.g U10 means under 10 years old.

•   To be eligible, a player must be UNDER the age at the START of the SOCCER year

To qualify for U12, a player's 12th birthday must be after the first day of the soccer year

Equal is not under!  If the player is already 12 when the soccer year starts, they CANNOT PLAY U12

•   Different organizations have different start dates for the soccer year !!  🤬

•   Triboro plays in with two different organizations 😱

Fall and Spring Sessions we're with:  Northeast Freedom Youth Soccer League (aka NFYSL)

NFYSL starts the soccer year on August 1st

Winter Sessions we're with:  Riverfront Sports Complex (RSC)

RSC starts the soccer year on January 1st

What are some examples?

Example #1
You have a son born on 7/20/2010, and you'd like to play in the Fall 2022 Session.

You are signing him up in June of 2022 and you believe he should play in the U12 division because he is 11 when you are signing him up.

For Spring and Fall sessions you use the NFYSL Soccer year which starts on 8/1 and ends on 7/31.  See picture below

Your son is not eligible.  He will have turned 12 before 8/1/2022 (i.e. his birthday is before the start of the NFYSL calendar)

So he cannot play in U12
He will have to play in U14 instead

Example #2

Your son born on 7/20/2010, would like to play in the Winter I  2022 Session.

For Winter sessions you use the RSC Soccer year which starts on 1/1 and ends on 12/31.  See picture below

Your son is eligible!!
😲   He did not turn 12 until after 1/1/2022 (i.e. his birthday is after the start of the RSC calendar).

This is confusing because the Winter I session is after the Fall session that he was too old for.  The key is the different start dates for the two calendars.

So he can play in U12

Note: He could play in U14 instead if desired.
Players always have the option to "Play up"

Ok, but does it ever get confusing?

Example #3

There are two players who are friends
Player #1: Born on 5/10/2008
Player #2: Born on 10/15/2008

They were both eligible to play U14 together in the Spring 2022 Session
The cut off for Spring 2022 was the previous year, 8/1/2021.  Both of them were 13 at that point.

Player #1 is not eligible to play U14 in the Fall 2022 session.
He was already 14 at the start of the new Soccer year on 8/1/2022

Player #2 was eligible to play U14 in the Fall 2022 session
He didn't turn 14 until after the start of the new Soccer year on 8/1/2022

They were both eligible to play U14 together in the Winter I 2022 Session
The Winter I session switches to the RSC calendar, that Soccer year starts on 1/1/2022. Both of them were 13 at the start of that calendar.

They are both ineligible to play U14 in the Winter II 2023 Session
The switch from Winter I to Winter II crosses over the end of the year on the RSC calendar.  So the cut off date moves up 1/1/2023.
Both of them are 14 at that point

I've had enough!
