Nipmuc Youth Baseball League Information

Cal Ripken Divisions

Single A:  ages 4-6  (or Pre-K & Kindergarten)

Ballplayers learn hitting and fielding fundamentals in a supportive team environment.  Young athletes hit the ball from a batting tee which is height-adjusted for a level swing, batting in order through the line-up for the entire game.  The primary goal is to begin to instruct young players in the fundamentals of baseball in a supportive team environment.

Teams will be scheduled to get together 2x per week. One weeknight for practice, and once on Saturdays for games. The weeknight practices are held on the same day, time and location each week. Saturday game times can vary slightly and are held at Grady Field in Mendon, MA..  Spring season only (no summer season).

Double A:  ages 7-8  (or 1st & 2nd grades)

This division makes use of a combination of coach pitch and kid pitch.

Teams will play 2 games per week. One during the week (on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday), and one on Saturdays. All games are played at the VFW Small field in Upton, MA. Additional practices may be scheduled by each team's coach, at their discretion.

The summer season will feature games played against surrounding towns.

Minors:  ages 9-10  (or 3rd & 4th grades)

Players continue to build and refine their fundamental skills while beginning to understand game strategy and teamwork. The games are played on 46’ (pitching distance) x 60’ (base paths) diamonds and include umpires calling the games.

Spring season includes interleague games against other Nipmuc Youth Baseball teams.  Sometimes games include teams from our Cal Ripken District (Douglas, Milford, Northbridge, Sutton & Uxbridge) and other surrounding towns (Hopedale, Blackstone, etc.)

Games are generally six innings and include pitching rules to limit the number of pitches a player can throw along with playing rules for other players (continuous batting order, playing time, limited stealing rules, etc.)  League guidelines are contained in a separate document.

Majors:  ages 11-12  (or 5th & 6th grades)

The most experienced level of Cal Ripken Baseball is played under Official Baseball Rules, but implements some special rules as necessary for the development and welfare of this young age group.  The games are played on 50' x 70' diamond with patched umpires and are intended to prepare the players for moving to the big diamond (Babe Ruth).  Some of the major differences include leading, unlimited stealing, dropped 3rd strike, etc.

SUMMER SEASON:
*NEW:  Nipmuc Teams now participate in the Tri-Valley Babe Ruth Summer League Tournament.  The summer tournament is more competitive than the spring and fall seasons, yet the league is for players of all ability levels and there are no tryouts. Attendance is flexible with 50% regular season attendance required for player playoff eligibility. Rosters are made intentionally large to give families flexibility around conflicts.

The summer season consists of around 12-games.  Typically half are played at home on Tetreault Field in Mendon, MA and the rest in towns that include Hopkinton, Holliston, Medway, Millis, Ashland, Medfield, Franklin, or Hopedale. There are three games per week. Games begin in June.  Playoffs begin in mid-July and end in late July, depending on the length of the playoff run.

There are two summer baseball age divisions:
Minors for baseball-aged 13 & 14 year-olds
Minors play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 5:30-8:00pm.

Majors for baseball-aged 15 to 17 year-olds
Majors (15-17) play on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays 5:30-8:00pm.
The Major division is an excellent opportunity for HS players to play competitive summer ball.
