Goal Safety - Keep your kids safe!

Minimize

On August 2, 2011, the 97th General Assembly passed HB1130.  This is the Goal Safety Act.  It is also referred to as Zach’s Law for a 6 year old soccer player from Vernon Hills who died after a portable goal fell on him in 2003.  Under the law, all movable soccer goals, both in and out of play, must be secured down through number of measures, including spikes, permanent in-ground systems, locks, and weights. Weighted backbars can be used to prevent tipping.  The fines to our club and coaches if we are found non-compliant are $1,000 per occurrence.  McHenry Area Soccer Federation has taken every precaution to make sure that what happened to Zach Tran in Vernon Hills does not happen here.  Our goals require 4 stakes to insure that they do not tip.  This year, we have supplied our trainers with portable goal weights to be used during training.  Please keep in mind that we need everyone’s help to make sure that we are compliant.  If you see unsecured goals with players playing by them, please do something about it.

It is imperative that your soccer players stay off the goals.  They should not be hanging from the top of the goal, try to see if they can reach it, like they do a basketball net, nor should they be playing inside the goal area.  The goals are not toys, and kids should not be using them as a fort during the soccer games and or practices either.

Coaches, please be checking both goals to make sure they are anchored.

At our coaches meetings we will be discussing this and if anyone has questions, they can always email me at president@mchenrysoccer.org or call me at 815-388-3319.

Thanks for you assistance in keeping our children safe.

Jeff Diedrich

President

Recreational League Director or Administrator,

As the new Director of Coaching for Illinois Youth Soccer Association, I am sending you a note to remind you what our State Association offers in terms of coaching education and what the  benefits are of being a member.  Recreational programs are the foundation of youth soccer and important part of our Association as this is where our players start their soccer experience.

I have worked with a myriad of recreational programs from military bases to clubs that I was the director of coaching of in San Diego for many years, as well as my experience as being a US Youth Soccer National Youth License instructor.  I am always happy to share my experience with leagues and clubs on positive and negative aspects of running a program.

As we start the new season in 2012, I encourage you to take advantage of FREE Clinics and/or host Coaches Education Courses for your program in your area.  Please read the following important information:

Resource Page - The following link to our recreational page will provide you with great resources http://www.illinoisyouthsoccer.org/Programs/rec.htm.

Free Clinics – The request form for a Free Clinic is posted on our website and will be processed and scheduled once completed and submitted to our office.  This clinic is for our member recreational league coaches and players only.  Either a qualified Staff Coach who has the National Youth License or I will present this course depending on my availability.

Youth Modules – We offer Youth Module 1 (U6/U8) and Youth Module 2 (U10/U12) to get your coaches licensed.  If you would like to host or get more information about the youth modules, please visit our website www.illinoisyouthsoccer.org and submit the host request form.

New E License – US Soccer has modified the ‘E’ curriculum so that now it is a license not a certificate.  The course is for those coaches who want to get higher level credentials and learn dynamic methods of coaching.

National Youth License Course – This is a 5-day course that focuses on age appropriate coaching.  It is a perfect course for a recreational or a program director with or without a coaching license.  Please contact me if you are interested in this course.  Information is also posted on our website.

Let me know if you if there is anything I can do for your program or if you have a question as I am happy to assist.   Feel free to contact me at doc@illinoisyouthsoccer.org
