First game of the Season

So you never know what the team is about until a few games into the season. Let's face it, the fall was a very difficult time for the Stars. I think the low point was the tournament when a team beat us 11-0 and the game was probably worse than the score. I watched the girls from the other team in the tournament play and said "we can do this." I knew our girls could dribble, but I hadn't see a lot of passing......or team playing. Anyway, the girls went into a winter indoor league and the same team showed up in the spring. A good sign.....not too many girls who found other interests or couldn't stand the losing.

So they worked hard in practice. New drills were taught with an emphasis on passing. The young ladies played hard and they had always liked each other but they began to trust each other.   Trust is so important in soccer because when you have trust you begin to play your position. Without trust you think "my team will let me down and I have to be a heroine" and then you begin to overcompensate.

I am trying not to get too proud here, it is only 1 game. But we won! Players moved to open space and got the ball. Players swept the ball to the sidelines on defense. People talked and we surprisingly......we came out the 2nd half and there was no let down.   When the other team scored, we dug it out of the back of the net and played on.   We played like a team!

I think the statement play of the game was when we had yet another corner.   The west side team pack it in. When you play for the west side your attitude is tough and aggressive.   I have never seen a west side team that wasn't. They always play like "you may beat us, but we are going to outhustle and outplay you". They had defended like six corners already and they always got it out. This one however.......

It stayed in the box and it got kicked around by the westies a little. The goalie came up to make the play.......and it got stuffed into the back of the net for hard goal. Not a soft little kick it and watch it barely roll over the line goal, but one that hopefully made a statement for this team for the year. It said "we are tough and aggressive also, and we came to beat you on your home field."

One game....well done. Next game on Wednesday. I also think we scored more goals this game than we did the entire last season.

Maybe the magic is there, maybe it isn't, but we always have this game.
