ELITE WINS BPL OPENER

Well, it is a glorious Sunday and no one does a home opener like the fine folks at Old McClure Park in Lebanon, Ohio. Home to the
G99 Elite Blue Bombers.

The facility was jammed packed and not an empty seat was to be had as an overflowing crowd of 68,245 crammed into every nook and cranny of this fine facility and were decked out in their Blue & White.

Today, the Blue Bombers open their BPL State season for the Spring of 2013 against CUP Real Madrid. No, this isn't Christiano Ronaldo and that group of lads but these lasses have some real talent and are fresh off of a 2-1 victory just yesterday in BPL league play. It goes without saying (but of course I will say it anyway) that there is no love lost between these two clubs and it stems all the way back to some bitter battles both on and off the pitch that I would be fired by my boss if I went into any depth here. So, hit me up for a few pints at a local watering hole and I will tell you some stories about this (maybe:).

One more thing before we get this game started as both teams are out on the pitch warming up right now. A Happy Birthday shout out to Diane Maloney (The Matriach of G99 Blue Bombers Football) and we all wish her a Happy 29th Birthday today.

The Blue Bombers decked out in there all blue kits and CUP sporting the all White version of their twelve different uniform combinations. I think only the Oregon Duck football team has as many color combinations as CUP does.

And here we go ... some early pressure by WC has resulted in some possession time in the offensive half and just like that Julia Goret has played a ball up and out to Hannah Dougan on the right wing who has found her old friend Maeve Maloney at the top of the box. Maeve swings and hits a low liner right at the keeper's feet and it is bobbled and trickles just over the line for a goal and a 1-0 Elite lead merely 2:12 seconds into the game.

WOW! Now, that is a quick start and this joint is really jumping with the Pep Band playing the "WC Fight Song" and fans chanting the Blue Bomber anthem in unison. It is a pretty cool scene here.

The rest of the first half has been a back and forth affair (mostly in the mid-third) with Elite just missing on two golden scoring chances as Hannah Dougan rocketed one off of the crossbar and just a few minutes later Sophia Nelson blasted one off of nearly the same spot. However, due to an awfully unkind crossbar, it still remains 1-0 at halftime instead of 2 or 3-0.

It will be interesting to see what type of adjustments CUP can make at the intermission. They have brought their back 4 up very high and forced some turnovers in WC's possession game by playing such a high line. CUP's back four are a feisty and scrappy bunch that lack some size but are very quick and aggressive to the ball.

As the second half gets underway, it is more of the same with Elite just being the bigger and stronger team but misplaying some touches to feet and turning the ball over in the midfield a bit too much for my liking. I am certain that (Coach) Skidmore is not going to be happy once he reviews the stat sheet from this game. It used to be that stats were distributed in the press box both at halftime and after the game as well to all those with press credentials BUT apparently that isn't going to happen any longer as it seems that some soccer nerd/parents (probably overzealous Dads if I had to guess) were getting access to those stat sheets and complaining about the accuracy of the data. Are you kidding me soccer nerds? Get a life people.

Sorry about that tangential rant but the voices inside my head have to be expressed at times or bad things might happen.

Another amazing play by #11 Maeve Maloney has just given WC Elite a 2-0 lead. We talked earlier about that "high line" that CUP has been playing with all game (a slippery slope). This was a long ball that Maeve recieved just inside the half line (onside) and controlled the first touch beautifully as she raced down the center left strip and just before the back was closing her angle down ripped a shot into the upper 90 of the far post over the goalie's hands for just a stunning goal that should make ESPN Sportscenters' top ten plays of the day for sure.

I have to say that it is a great birthday present for her mother and it is awesome for this beat writer to see #11 back and playing at such a high level. I think she is playing as well as I ever remember her playing during her career (all the way back to her U6 days).

The rest of the game is fairly uneventful as WC Elite just isn't giving CUP much space to operate in their offensive end and the final whistle sounds and WC Elite has a 2-0 victory and their first BPL win of the Spring. Well done, ladies!

A solid effort all the way around and this defense and back 4 continues its strong showing as they have only allowed 1 goal in 5 games thus far in the Spring.

There wasn't even ONE quality scoring chance on Ashley West in this entire game and that is very impressive.

It will be an important week of training for the squad and this upcoming stretch of games next weekend will tell us more about how good of a team we might have here.

On Friday night, WC Elite plays a TPL game against OE Academy. This game is back at the friendly confines of McClure Park at 6:30 pm. OE has been boosted over the winter with a number of signings at the transfer window of players (6 or 7 of them) from TFA Elite. So, this game is one that I can't wait to see how WC Elite plays.

On Saturday afternoon (12:00 pm), WC Elite travels to Miami Meadows Park to tangle with CSA Elite and they haven't lost a game either in the Spring and have some very impressive OSSL and TPL wins to date. These two played a 1-0 game (WC won) in the Fall of a tournament final but this will be a tough one as well in a pivotal TPL battle.

Finally on Sunday, WC Elite is back at McClure Park to play CJ Gold in another TPL affair. I have never seen this group from Columbus play but they too have some impressive results (a tie with CUP Black recently among others) on their Spring resume.

For me, this is another progression in this team's level of play and features some of the best teams they have played to date all in a row.

We wish our team well and will update you next week on this gauntlet of weekend games.

Hope to see you at one of more of them ...
