Wrap-Up of Game #2

Broncos Team Parents

A well played and hard fought game this week
This was a much tougher, and more experienced opponent this week than in our 1st game
- But our defense played tough all game long, and came up w/ some critical stops when we needed them
    - Fantastic job to everybody

Game Result:
Broncos: 6
Saints: 6

Team Highlights:
- We had  another big interception in this game (that's 2 interceptions in 2 games - Outstanding!!!)
- We also had several pass knock-downs, on plays that could have resulted in TD's for our opponents
- And we had several key flag pulls on 3rd down plays (forcing our opponents to turn the ball over on downs)

What went well:

Running plays:
Our running plays were on target again this week
- We had quick & clean exchanges between the QB’s and the RB's (no dropped ball's again this week - Awesome!!!)
- And our RB’s were quick to take the hand-off & turn up the field.
(Great job QB’s & RB’s)

Run & Pass Defense:
Our defense was also solid again this week
- We got another key interception (on the series after our opponents only TD pass), and I think really took away their confidence for throwing the ball through the rest of the game
- The kids also did a great job staying in their home position and pulling flags, giving their RB's little or no gain on most of their running plays
(Great job defense – both squads)

What we can work on:

Passing plays:
Our passing plays struggled a little this week
- Main difference from last week to this week, was that our opponents were much more experienced in their pass coverage, and really didn't give our receivers much of a chance to get open
- Also our QB's were holding the ball just a little too long (based on the tight coverage), which allowed the defense to stay on our WR's, and forced us to attempt tough throws into multiple coverage areas
- The other issue was that a lot of our passes were getting hung up in the air (based on the windy conditions during the game), and ended up being jump balls between our receivers and our opponent's entire defense
(We'll work w/ the WR's to get to their positions quickly, and QB's releasing the ball quickly and more directly at their intended WR's )

RB Timing:
Another issue this week was that our timing was off for the fake RB and the real RB at the QB handoff location
- One of the key items for all of our plays is that the fake RB's need to cause confusion for defense at the QB hand-off location and "sell the fake"
(Pulling some of the defenders with them and away from the real RB)
- If the fake RB's miss their timing, or if they don't make it into the handoff area at all, our opponent's defense can all key in on the real RB and simply go for their flags only
Again, our opponent this week had a much more experienced defense, and they were watching for the ball exchange very carefully
(We'll work on RB timing at this week's practice)

RB's going in the intended direction of the play
Lastly, we also struggled a little bit with our running directions
- By design, our plays are set up not only to confuse the defense, but also force the defense to spread out (based on the multiple directions the 3 potential RB's go in)
  - This hopefully gives the actual RB less defenders to run against and more room to run
This week we had some RB's stopping at the QB hand-off, and trying to go in a different direction
- And while having improvisation skills as a RB is important (and we definitely want the kids to look down field and choose the best area to run the ball), we also want the kids to understand the intended direction of the play (If the RB changes their running direction, they can sometime run right back into the area where the defense was waiting)
      - The advantage we have on the defense is lost once the RB comes to a stop

Follow-up Items:

Team Pictures this week:
Team pictures are this week (5/3). Our scheduled time slot is 4:15 pm (after our game)
- Please plan for pre-game practice, followed by the game, and then team pictures
We'll send out another note this week, with instructions in how to pre-order
(You get 4 freee wallets if you pre-order on line)

Potential additional practice through the week:
- If the team would be interested, we could potentially have 1 additional practice through the week
- This practice would be geared at improving specific skills (RB cuts, QB throwing, WR catching), something that's difficult to work on in the pre-game practice
Best weeknight evening for the coaches seems to be a Tues or Fri evening

We would like to know what level of interest and participation we could get from the team:
Please let us know by responding w/ a:
1) We are interested, and either night would be OK
2) We are interested, but only Tues evening is OK
3) We are interested, but only Fri evening is OK
4) We are interested, but neither of those nights work
5) We are not interested in an additional practice

End of Season Party
We received some responses on this, but I would like to make sure we have everyone's input before setting a date:

If you haven't had a chance to respond, please let us know your preference w/ a
1) Party on either the 13th or 14th is OK
2) Prefer on the 13th but either is OK
3) Only the 13th is OK
4) Prefer on the 14th, but either is OK
5) Only the 14th is OK
6) Neither the 13th nor the 14th is OK
That should be it for now
- Let us know if you have any questions / concerns

Sincerely,
Tom Dohring
