Jersey United Spartans u16B ASL Win EDP Easter Showcase

Over the Easter weekend, the u16 Boys team, Jersey United Spartans 99/00B ASL, won the EDP Easter Showcase. The Spartans have lost a couple heart breakers at the Hammonton complex in the past couple years, but finally got over the hump winning the championship 1-0 win over Cherry Hill Vipers.

The Spartans defense held strong all weekend only allowing 2 goals in 240 minutes of play. Kyle Blohm, not 100% healthy, cleaned up many messes, not allowing the opposition many quality chances. Goalkeeper Calogero Caruso was solid in goal all weekend, having to make a couple huge saves on Saturday. Nick Tavernise won every ball in the air and played some fantastic long passes up the field. Lucas Mann continues to show that he is one of the team's top defenders.

Tyler Martins & Matt Warshaw battled for goal of the weekend in game 1. The Spartans came out strong in the opening half with the conditions in their favor. However, it was not a pretty 2nd half going into the wind. The Spartans found a way to score a third goal and relieve the pressure against a good Henlopen team.

In game 2 PDA Jinky knocked the ball around the Spartans for the first 15 minutes, but the Spartans defense held PDA to low percentage shots. Warshaw scored a goal from 30 yards out, which gave the Spartans some confidence and allowed them to maintain a bit more possession. PDA scored off a scramble in the box, to tie the game and it would finish 1-1, a fair result.

Saturday morning, the Spartans needed to win the final group game to guarantee their spot in the final. The first half, the Spartans came out sluggish, but figured out to way to score a goal and win 1-0, in an sloppy performance. In the Finals, the Spartans dominated play and finally found a way through the defense with a lofted ball by Aaron Sandler to Warshaw. The goalkeeper fouled Warshaw, who then put away his 4th goal of the weekend, a penalty kick into the bottom left corner. The Spartans would park the bus for the last 10 minutes and hold on to their second 1-0 win of the day, in an impressive championship performance.

Avery Coreschi & Kenneth Vaquiz played almost every minute of the weekend at center midfield, clogging up the the middle of the park on defense and distributing the ball on offense. Matt Tedeschi, recently back from injury, provided a spark up top. Wingers Ira Daly, Tony Pereira & Jason Berkowitz, worked hard up and down the field defending, plus many creating goal scoring chances.
