GREETINGS PARENTS AND PLAYERS :

Saturday’s games were disappointing as we dropped back to back games 6 - 2 and 2-1 to WNSL.  While we played solidly in the field, we struggled at the plate and left a ton of guys on base.  I think this had a little to do with limited time together last week due to rain and playing a talented and well coached team that had some timely hits and made some plays in the field.

There were a few things that stuck out to me.  Our team is still struggling on swinging at pitches only in the zone.  We have guys who continue to swing at pitches that they have absolutely no chance of hitting and watching perfect pitches go past.  WNSL team was very disciplined at the plate and seemed to only swing at strikes.  This approach led to them drawing a bunch of walks and having guys on base instead of retiring to the dugout.  Secondly, we still have some guys who are not listening to coaches on the base paths.  This is represented by not getting proper leads and not getting good jumps when it is time to steal.  Lastly, we had a few lapses in the field where guys did not go “all out” in order to insure an out.

I feel like these issues all have to do with confidence and can be improved with repetition and practice beginning tonight.  I still feel that we have an excellent group of young men and that we will get back on track.  As I reflected with my son after the games on Saturday, I noticed how quickly his disappointment seemed to disappear and he was on to the next thing that he had going on that afternoon.  I took this opportunity to think about the other gift that coaching baseball has provided to me.  This gift is PATIENCE.  Patience with shortcomings, patience as we build a team and the idea that each of these guys are only 13 and 14 years old and that our time together is what makes this special.

We will get back to work tonight at 6:15pm at Granny White Park.  The other Brentwood team has the field at 7:15pm, so we will go from 6:15pm to 7:15pm on the field and then move to the batting cages for the last 45 minutes.  Practice will end at 8:00pm.    We will also hold practice on Wednesday night this week at 7:15pm until 8:45pm at Granny White Park.

Games this weekend are at Granny White.  We are playing at 9am and 11am.  We will play the Brentwood Rays.

Highlights from this weekend:

The team infield played very well in situations with runners on base.  We were put to the test on multiple occasions with the infield in to attempt to prevent runs.

Himesh                came into the game to relieve and pitched out of a 1 out situation with a strike out and ground out

Davis                     another great pitching performance, certainly pitched well enough to win, lost 2-1 decision

Seth                       made several catches in shallow centerfield, played solid first base

Zach                       had two great hits, first he was robbed on a running catch in CF, next at bat drove past CF to the fence

Parker                   played solid 2B, good approach at plate

Caleb                    had a great at bat that resulted in an infield hit due to hustle down the first base line

Adam                    had two plays at 2B to get runner at 1st

Will                       playing all over the diamond, reached base and slid into 3rd under a tag

Robert                 drew a walk, played well behind the plate, solid at 1B, unassisted double play

Matthew             plays all over the diamond, good at bat to battle back to full count after being down 0-2

Braxton                reached base, made a great outfield assist and got runner at 1B

I look forward to seeing everyone at the field tonight at Granny White at 6:15pm.
