Cafe 58 Update (10/19)

Hello again Soccer and Cafe 58 fans,

The 4 topics included in this update are:
1.  Cafe 58 tips to help you enjoy Silent Saturday (which is this weekend throughout all AYSO Regions in the San Fernando Valley).
2.  Reminder about Cafe 58 Special Day - Sat., Oct 28, Tri-Tip Sandwiches
3.  Great big thanks to some very special volunteers and our Cafe 58 Sponsors
4.  Update on our Scholarship Funds

1.  Cafe 58 tips to help you enjoy Silent Saturday - As you are definitely aware of by now, Saturday, Oct 21, is Silent Saturday on the soccer fields of VNSO and throughout the San Fernando Valley.  Emails have been sent with the guidelines, so I'm not going to repeat them.  However, from the perspective of Cafe 58, the key question is: what can we do to support your efforts on Silent Saturday?  The answer is obvious (at least to me!!!) - Get some food at Cafe 58 BEFORE the game, bring it to the field and keep munching throughout the entire game.  For a 50+ minute game, this might require LOTS of food, but I think that the smacking of the lips on a couple of tasty egg sandwiches or hamburgers with fries won't violate the silence guidelines (as long as the lip-smacking is done relatively quietly).  And ask yourself the question - what else would you rather be doing to keep that voice inside other than supporting Cafe 58?

2.  Reminder about Cafe 58 Special Day - Sat., Oct 28, Tri-Tip Sandwiches - on Oct 28 (not this weekend, but next weekend), we are going to be offering our first Special Day with Tri-Tip sandwiches.  The Tri-Tip will be slow-smoked for lots of hours (more than 8 and less than 40).  You'll get 2 (as in TWO) sandwiches, bigger than sliders but smaller than foot-longs, for the very low price of just $7.  More info in next week's update...

3.  Great big thanks to some very special volunteers and our Cafe 58 Sponsors - As I mentioned last week, Marci and I were not at the park most of the day last Saturday, so thanks to the efforts of some GREAT volunteers (Marta Harmon, Norah Vera, Amy Menke, Jaime Timsit and Paige Millenbaugh, and our GOG's - Allan Weaver and Steve Reisig), the day went off as smooth as one of our Strawberry Banana smoothies.  Also, we continue to get AWESOME support every week from our two main Cafe 58 sponsors - Central Valley Builders Supply (with all of the propane for the grill, for which we say "tank-you" very much) and Groundwork Coffee (for all of the Certified Organic coffee that DID win our taste test once again this year).  Please support our Sponsors as a way of saying thank you to them - they are local businesses giving back to their community.

4.  Update on our Scholarship Funds - To date, we have raised close to $7,000 from the proceeds of Cafe 58 for our program - this is incredible given that we are just about half-way through the season.  Let's keep the momentum going to keep our registration fees as low as possible and still provide the required financial support to members of our community to participate in our program.  We did have a "dip" in our sales last week (not the cheese dip used on our Nachos), but that was expected for the week after Picture Day.  We are right on track to meet our goal, and you can see that progress on our Cafe 58 webpage located at:

We hope to see everyone again this weekend - and remember to enjoy Silent Saturday; just let the kids play and you'll be pleasantly surprised at how wonderful it is to see how the kids work together and enjoy the game.
