Message from Coach Gyllenborg

Hello everyone,

We are now in the full swing of things for the winter/spring season and have already made many strides. While I may not have had the opportunity to speak with you all personally, it has been a pleasure getting to know everyone associated with this team, and I have been made to feel very welcome in my first year with this team.

What we have been doing:

Upon my arrival with the club one of the two main goals of myself, and Boys Director Bill Boyle have been:

1. To create a technical foundation for all of the boys that can prepare them for their soccer future.
2. To expose them to an elite level training environment

Although many of our training sessions have looked slow, repetitive, and tedious it is essential that all of the boys gain a solid foundation of skills leading up to the outdoor season, and moving forward with their soccer careers. I have discussed, and explained this to the boys and they have been very receptive in their willingness to concentrate and work on things, that at times, maybe seem a little boring.

When I talk about an elite level training environment, I am mostly speaking of the soccer culture in which the boys experience. How early they show up for practice, what they do when they show up, how they look, how they interact with each other, and how they conduct themselves on the field. This goal will take time, but again the boys are embracing the challenge and have made great improvements.

Team Goals:

As mentioned in the previous section we have two main goals during this Winter/ Spring period:
 ·      For the boys to develop a solid technical foundation.
 ·     For the boys to begin to understand, and experience an elite level  training environment/culture.

Moving forward:

As we move into our games at 481 it is important that we all support the goals of this period, and not get too wrapped up in the numbers on the scoreboard. I hate losing more than anyone, but our mission and objectives as a team are going to be focused on the goals above, and the outdoor season. Throughout these games I am looking to see the team gel as a group, learn how to compete, and play the right way. Doing these things will set us up for great future success, regardless of the current scores.

Team Philosophy:

I recently found a great motivational video from a speaker named, Simon Sinek. What he speaks about is the relationship between success, and doing things the right way, for the right reasons. He talks about people, and companies that succeed base everything they do on their beliefs, the “Why”. Companies that fail, or fall behind, base everything they do on results, money, the “What”.  My philosophies with this team are very much based with the Why. We will do things based upon our beliefs in doing things the right way, with the right people, and ultimately will gain the successes we seek.

How you can help:

In conclusion I would like to briefly speak about how you, as parents can help this team.
·       Believe in what we are doing; try not to get caught up in Win’s and Losses initially.
·       Encourage and assist your boys in spending time with the ball away from games and practices.
·       ENCOURGE THEM TO WATCH THE GAME!!!!
 ·      Do your best to refrain from sideline coaching. Your support of  the boys during games is essential. But often the information coming from the parents’ sidelines differs from what I am saying.

I am excited for all of the challenges ahead, and look forward to working along side you all to better these boys as Soccer players.
