Women's Tennis Defeat Dutchmen for MAC Commonwealth Title

Hershey, PA - Messiah women's tennis upset the top-seeded Lebanon Valley Dutchmen 5-3 on Saturday to win their second-straight MAC Commonwealth title. Due to weather conditions, the matches had to be moved indoors, but that didn't stop the Falcons as they won two of three doubles matches and Sydney Schandel, Meagan Scala, and Amanda Adams were victorious in singles to earn the championship.

No. 1 doubles Kelly Hopkins and Carly Dove and No. 2 doubles Schandel and Adams each won their matches with ease, both defeating the Dutchmen pairs by 8-3 scores. Hopkins and Dove improve to 8-2 overall this season when paired together. In No. 3 doubles, Meagan Scala and Emily Wichert fell to Melanie Haas and Elise Hanks-Witaszek 8-2.

No. 6 singles Amanda Adams improved to 6-0 on the year, defeating LVC's Megan WIlliams in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1. No. 4 singles Scala added a victory to bring the Falcons within one win of taking the title. However, Dove fell in No. 2 singles in tightly contested sets and Hopkins fell in No. 1 singles, cutting the Falcon lead to 4-3. Messiah would prevail, though, as Schandel came from behind to knock off the Dutchmens' Haas (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) for the fifth and final point, securing the championship.

With a doubles victory and the title-clinching singles win, Sydney Schandel took home the honor of the 2017 MAC Commonwealth Women's Tennis Championship Most Valuable Player.

The Falcons await their placing in the brackets of the NCAA Championships Tournament, which will be released on Monday.
